Again!

Wild Water Adventures was featured in a news article on Tuesday June 24th, 2008 in the Outdoors section of the Eugene news paper The Register Guard titled "Running Rapids" by Mike Stahlberg. The news paper version is better than the online version. In the paper version there is a photo I took of Ken, one of our guides, getting a bucket full of water dumped on his head by the youth group in his boat. This is the type of company we are. We are all about having a great time on the river. Also there is a directory of local outfitters in the paper and we of course were in that directory. The article makes mention of our $39 McKenzie Quickie and our Round Trip Transportation service to the river and back. Wild Water picked up these wonderful folks from the Courtyard by Marriott in Springfield Oregon; took them rafting on a Half Day McKenzie; braved the weather and had a wonderful time rafting at 8,380 CFS river flows. Wild Water then returned our new river friends back to the Courtyard by Marriott just in time for Pizza and Hockey. Cheers and thanks to Brian, Harold, Katie, Brad, Maggie, Mike, Brett, and of course a special thanks goes to Chris who found himself in the river not once, not twice, but three times. You made my day very special Chris. The weather was beautiful. Blue skies, clean air and temperatures reaching into the low 90's. We didn't have any commercial trips that day which was a same but there was no way I was going to miss out on such a beautiful day in May on the McKenzie. Now, I figured the river would be high because of all the snow we had this past winter. If you haven't heard, we got over 200 inches of base. With the warm weather I had imagined swollen rivers. Well, come Saturday morning I got up and got ready and checked my river flow widget to learn that the McKenzie was measuring at 11,700 CFS. I immediately thought "no way". I expected something around 6,000 CFS. So, I assumed there was a mistake somewhere, that maybe the gage was broken or calibration was off, or data server glitch.

I met up with the guys and two gals and we headed out. Then it hit me... We were on the 126 heading East and were crossing the Hendricks Bridge. I looked to the East up the river and knew right then the gage was dead on. Needless to say everyone became excited. However we did have a little problem. Non of us have rafted the McKenzie at such flows. I debated in my mind whether to proceed or call it a day but, the curiosity over ruled my hesitations. Normally I would pass on such flows but I knew my crew and I knew we had the ability to take on whatever hazard may be present. So we went for it. It was a risk I and everyone was willing to take.

We arrived at Finn Rock boat launch. It was all under water. Looking out over the river we noticed the speed in which the flow was running. I estimated its speed was around ten miles per hour. It was fast and this kind of speed can be hazardous. Your decision time collapses. You have to be ready to move and be able to read the river much further ahead. Because the river was moving so fast we decided to begin our trip up river at Forest Glen boat landing near the community of Blue River.

we arrived at Forest Glen, geared up went over safety and got on the river. Pattie, one of Wild Water Adventures guides took her 13 foot hyside down with some friends and another Wild Water guide. A mix of Friends and Wild Water guides joined me in Wild Waters Adventures new Oregon Ducks boat. It's a 14 foot Green and Yellow Maravia raft. This was her maiden voyage and she did extremely well.

I was amazed at the difference. I recognized nothing. Rocks that arose out of the river some five feet were gone, totally submerged. To our surprise the river was so high that every significant rock I could think of was completely covered. I expected potentially large holes but all we encountered were large standing waves. Brown's Hole and Marten Rapids were washed out. Nothing there. However at the entrance of marten's was a very large tree that has shifted and could cause problems for normal rapid entrance at normal summer flows. We'll have to wait and see. We ran Marten's on the far river left and encountered nothing but small 2 and 3 foot standing waves.

Another point of interest was jumping rock just after Brown's holes perhaps a half mile. At normal summer flows at around 2,000 CFS the rock stands 9 to 10 feet above the river surface. On May 17th it only rose about 3 feet above the river surface. Aside from avoiding river debris such as small trees and logs we had no complications. However keep in mind that we were a group of experienced rafters calculating the risks at every moment and using the collective skill and knowledge of all the participants in our craft. I can't stress enough the inherent dangers of rafting swollen rivers. If you do not have the skill nor the experience than please stay off such rivers. Participating in a guide school, working with an outfitter, and even going on commercial river trips can start you on your journey to understanding the beauty and even deadly force of the river. Flowing water should always have your respect.

Our river trip was uneventful, which is a good thing. What I haven't mention is that all day long we were hitting 4, 6, and even 8 foot standing waves. It was seriously like a roller coaster. We hit wave after wave. We nearly rolled the raft several times. the hydraulics were very powerful. But man, was it a blast! Of corse we weren't the only ones out there. The talk of the day was Clove Point Rapid. There were a series of 6 to 8 foot standing waves. This is a very popular play spot for kayakers. There is a large eddie that is easy to catch and brings you right up into a surf hole. I found this video on YouTube that kind of shows what it was like. And speaking of video. There were a bunch of Kayakers in the eddie and on the rocks at Clover Point Rapid that day. One of the guys had a video camera. As we hit the standing waves we nearly flipped. We got out of it without flipping but as I looked up I noticed a guy video taping us. If you are reading this, could you please post that video of us on YouTube or Vimeo? I would love to see it! Thanks.

So what normally, at normal summer flows, takes us four and a half hours to run took us only an hour and forty five minutes. Yes... Did I mention the river was running very fast. When I got home I confirmed the gage and the river had peeked at 12,000 CFS that day. Pattie and her friends rand the Santiam river from Pack Saddle to Mill city the next day at a flow of 15,000 CFS. She survived and she said it was a blast but I'll leave it up to her to tell that story.

Keep rafting and stay alive!

I'm having a moment - thoughts of the McKenzie River

How splendid the McKenzie river is.
